Another BRSC Update

February 28th, 2008

Dear Families:
Here is another club update, and as always, feel free to pass on to others.
1) Signups for the Pacific Crest competition will be coming down in the next few days - so make sure your swimmer is on the list. Again, this is a B/C competition, so those with “A” times in certain events/distances cannot swim those. This is scheduled for 3/15-16, at Lebanon.
2) Age group sectional entries will also be coming down very soon. Our swimmers have to qualify for this competition, as it is a time standard event. Check with coaching staff if you are uncertain about your swimmer qualifying.
3) Jon Cutting brought up something to me that I have overlooked. There is a lot of information available to all swimmers, parents, coaches, and officials through the Oregon Swimming website , or by purchasing a 2008 Oregon Swimming Guidebook ($5.00). Information such as time standards to various championships, directions to all pools in the state, the entire ‘08 competition calendar, as well as bylaws, records, etc. I encourage everyone to purchase one - if for no other reason than for directions.
4) Our spring break from competition will be during the weeks of: 3/17 thru 3/30. We will “restart” on 3/31/08, at the same times for right now. If this changes, we’ll let everyone know ahead of time.
5) There will be a general club meeting on Wed., April 2nd, @ 6:00pm. At this time we will discuss changing the club by-laws, question & answer period with Mark Majeski (Willamette AD) & myself, and then a vote of proposed by-laws. Every family will receive a copy of the proposed by-laws in the mail very soon. Please read and ask questions of me before or at the meeting.
Thanks to all for your support this season. It has been a very successful year!!

BRSC info

February 26th, 2008

Dear Families:
Here are a couple reminders, and an update about upcoming meets. Feel free to pass on, or call me if you have further questions.
1) The End of the Season meet at Corvallis, scheduled for 3/8-9 is OFF our calendar. This happened due to three circumstances, all out of our control. a) The meet was changed from Corvallis to Tigard-Tualatin for this upcoming weekend, b) the Bearcats were NOT on the list of preferred teams to be invited (which we didn’t know), and c) the meet was downsized which probably prompted BRSC to not get invited.
I know this is a BIG change for some, as some families have changed their work schedules to try and attend. I apologize for this, but these decisions were made without our knowledge, thus out of our control.
2) Thus, the Pacific Crest Championships in Lebanon will be our End of the season meet for our B/C level competitors. The date is set for 3/15-16, in Lebanon, and meet information has been posted. A new signup sheet will also be posted.
3) A reminder that the lockerooms will be closed to all starting Wed thru Friday of this week. We will still hold practice, but the swimmers should wear their suits under warmups, and have to leave without showering after practice. Again, this is for the OSAA Basketball tournament that Willamette is hosting.
4) Congrats to our 11-14 competitors from this past weekend’s state championships. There were so many great time drops, and placings in the top 8, that it precludes me from writing all the names - I’m just afraid I’d miss someone. I believe the club finished in 12th place (maybe higher), as the scores weren’t completely tabulated when we left Sunday nite. Needless to say, I enjoyed all the swimming, seeing so many state records set, and the enthusiasm and support of/for our swimmers.
Thanks, and again we apologize for the change in schedule, but nothing we could foresee or change.

BRSC Update

February 22nd, 2008

Dear Families:
Here is the latest, and some clarification of upcoming events & news.
1) We will be attending 2 end of season competitions. The first is located in Corvallis, 3/8-9, and the second will be located in Lebanon - Pacific Crest Chmps., 3/15-16. I know we have a lot of signups for Corvallis, but I also encourage as many to attend the Pac. Crest Inv. as well. We will send coaches to both competitions.
2) Next week, as some may have noticed, the lockerooms will be closed from Wed-Sat. due to the OSAA Basketball tournament being hosted by Willamette. Swimmers should come dressed down in w/ups, and realize they won’t be able to shower and change after practices.
3) Signups are up for the Senior (3/6-3/9) and Age group Sectionals (3/14-16), both at Federal Way, WA. These are qualifying standards competitions. Check with coaches if you have questions.
4) Coach Kate has told me that the club will be the recipient of a “guest” coach for a few days. His name is Jim Montrella, with a long resume of competitive swimming success, with the purpose to examine our club, the workings, staff, and make recommendations. He is being sent out from USA Swimming in Colorado Springs at no cost to us, and as part of their effort to aid in club development. Jim will be here sometime in March, exact dates to be determined.
5) In the next couple weeks, all families will receive a proposed set of bylaws for the club. These have been worked on by a committee I chose, for the purpose of transferring operations and procedures back to the parents. There are reasons both pro and con for this, and will be brought up at a general members meeting TBA, where the vote will take place. Please read thoroughly, ask questions, and plan on attending the meeting.
Thanks to all for your support,
Al Stephenson

BRSC Update

February 18th, 2008

Dear Families:
I do hope everyone is enjoying this fabulous weather and sunshine. As always, feel free to pass on this email to those not on my list. Here’s the latest of BRSC:
1) Congratulations to ALL of our high school swimmers. I hope you’ve been reading about the swimming results in the Statesman-Journal, and seen the results of all their hard work and dedication this year. As well as a nice article about Coach Kate in one of last week’s columns. So many great performances at the HS Districts and State meets - at all levels. Again, congrats to ALL!!
2) Not to be outdone by our high schoolers, starting this past weekend, our state age group championships began with the 10 & unders in Springfield. Some results from that: Jeffrey Tran won both 50 & 100 Breastrokes (this is the third year in a row he’s won both breastroke races), Evette Dow got 4 seconds and a third, 3rd places were won by Colby Evenson(50 Free) and Cole Rumrill (50 Back), and top 8 finishes by Allie Clifford, Hannah Clifford, Colby Evenson, Carter Garfield, Keara Haack, Logan James, Cole Rumrill, Sophia Showers, Meredith Todd.
100 % best times were recorded by: Colby Evenson, Carter Garfield, Keara Haack, Abby Hudson, Logan James, Cole Rumrill, Jake Shorb, and Meredith Todd.
New Age Group Sectional qualfiers include: both 10 & under boys relays, Carter Garfield in 200 IM and 50 fly, and Logan James in 50 Back.
3) The location for the Pacific Crest Chps. has been changed from Corvallis to Lebanon, but the date remains the same - 3/15-16. This is our last competition of the year, it’s B/C, and has been very well attended in the past. If your name is on the list - great! If you can’t make the change in location but your name is on the list - please remove it. And, if you wish to attend make sure your name is on the list.
4) 11-14’s OSI Championships are this weekend @ Corvallis. Warmups are: Thursday, 4pm; Fri-Sun 7:30-8:45am. Finals (yes for these age groups, top 8 return to swim finals) start not sooner than 2 hours after completion of prelims. This is also a “positive” check-in is required for all relays and events of 400 yards or longer. See you there!
5) Thanks to Joel Rumrill and his various “committee members” for the potluck spaghetti feed. It was a wonderful event, and it’s always good to see parents and swimmers in a non-aquatic environment.
6) For those wishing to “trade” a youth large for a youth medium size - see Coach Kate. She has some mediums left over. If you wish to purchase a T-shirt, the cost is $10, and the polos are $15.
Enjoy the weather, and the end of the season is quickly coming upon us!
