BRSC Winter Celebration & Spagetti Dinner

January 25th, 2008

On Tuesday, February 12th, the Bearcat Swim Team will hold its annual Winter Championship Celebration at Queen of Peace Church in South Salem.
This event is to celebrate the achievements of all of our swimmers as they prepare for the Pacific Crest, State and Sectional Meets in the next month. Team tee-shirts will be given out to all swimmers.
The event will be from 5:45 PM to approx 8:15 PM. The club will provide spaghetti and bread. Sign-up sheets will go up at the pool for families to bring dishes to round out the potluck dinner. Volunteers will be needed to cook, serve and clean-up. A sign-up sheet will also be posted for those who can help.
More information will be distributed as we get closer to the event. Please plan to bring $5 per family for a donation to Queen of Peach church for allowing the club to hold this event at the church.
Thank You
Joel Rumrill

BRSC Update

January 24th, 2008

Dear Families:
OK, I’ve had enough of this cold weather! How about you? Hopefully, everyone is staying warm and fighting off the colds/flu that come with this type of weather.
Here’s the latest of BRSC happenings:
1) Signups for the last couple meets will be coming down soon. Please check the bulletin board for dates of competitions, and sign ups. The end of the short course season is soon upon us, and the coaching staff would LOVE to get as many of our swimmers qualified for various state championships as possible. 2) I have been contacted that there is a serious need for officials for the various high school district meets. If you are certified, and willing to volunteer your services, please contact the local HS coach/AD of your choosing. 3) #2 above has again shown one of our club’s deficiencies. If you are interested in becoming a certified official (Electronic Technician, Stroke & Turn, etc.) please let me know and I’ll be more than happy to arrange a clinic. As of now I know of one parent who has volunteered (Thanks David Tran), but we really need a couple more. 4) I have received a couple complaints about swimmer behavior/language in the lockerooms. Please inform your swimmers that any transgression is not tolerated, whether it be physical or verbal. Respect for teammates, parents, coaches, is most important to keeping this club in Sparks. Kate and I will monitor as best we can, but parents are ultimately responsible - and free to enter the appropriate gender lockeroom to assist or monitor. 5) Many thanks to all for getting your financial accounts current. I hope to have “new” statements, using less paper for February’s billing. 6) Kate and I are putting together a “statement” regarding how we sign up our swimmers for the various competitions. We hope to have it finalized, printed, and distributed on the bulletin boards in the very near future. It should enlighten parents and swimmers about our philosophy, how we choose events/strokes, challenge our swimmers to try new events/distances, and “be the best they can be.” 7) We’ve just received the meet info for all three OSI Championships, 10 & unders, 11-14’s, and Seniors. 10 & unders are held at Willamalane/Sprinfield 2/16-17, 11-14’s are at Corvallis 2/21-24, and Seniors at MHCC 2/28-3/2. Look for the signups on the bulletin board, and know these are all qualifying competitions. 8) I’m already being asked about spring tryouts, believe it or not. Before we add swimmers, staff will decide on moveups/group changes, and current roster levels. If and when we hold tryouts, it will be in April - generally one of the first couple weekends.
Thanks, and see you at the next competition,
Al Stephenson

Dear Families:
I’ve finally caught up with 98% of the stuff I missed during my trip to California. I have put the latest billing statement in your swimmer’s folders. I will “close out” the statements, to shorten everyone’s bill after 2/1.
Fees for past meets are: CAT AB Inv. 1/11-13/08 - $3 per swim, $5 surcharge; OSI Senior Open Chps. held in Corvallis 12/14-16/07 - $3 per swim, $5 surcharge; Senior Sectionals held at MHCC 12/7-9/07 - $8.50 per individual event, $4 per relay, $15 surcharge.
Again, many congratulations to Tori Simenec for her selection and participation on the USA National Junior Team that went to Australia and competed vs. the aussies, and the Chinese. I hope you kept up with her progress thru Kate, and maybe were present to listen to her talk to the Bearcats of her experience and answer their questions.
Check out the bulletin board for upcoming competitions and the signup date. There is about two (2) months left of the short course season, and we want to get as many of our athletes qualified for a state championship as possible.
See you on deck,
Al Stephenson

BRSC Update

January 2nd, 2008

Dear Families:
It is my sincere wish that the Holidays were filled with merriment, good wishes, and dreams come true for of you and yours.
This is a brief update, and feel free to pass on to those not on my list.
1) Hillsboro Inv. entries have been sent. And any additional changes need to be made thru Kate.
2) We return to our “normal” practice schedule for our age groupers. Seniors have some minor changes for the next week or so.
3) The coaching staff will be short handed for the next week. Al will be with the university team in LA until 1/10, and Gretchen won’t return until the week of 1/14. Please be patient while they’re gone.
4) There will be NO PRACTICE on 1/11, Friday pm. due to a university dual swimming competition.
Thanks, and again, I hope everyone’s holidays were bountiful.
Al Stephenson
