updates from Al from 4/27

March 31st, 2007

Dear Families:
I hope this finds you all well, resting over the spring break, and truly taking the time “off.” Here is the latest of goings on with the Bearcat Swim Club, and as always, feel free to pass this on to anyone not on my list.
1) We will NOT be starting practice at Willamette for our younger age groups on Monday, 4/2. The pool is still not ready, and I have asked for a definitive plan of action and dates of completion. I am again hoping for the following week. We will not be using Chemawa for our younger groups at this time.
2) Seniors will still be starting on Monday, 4/2 at Chemawa. This has been setup thru Kate’s willingness to teach classes at the school in exchange for swim time. Thus, seniors will not be charged the additional pool rate as in the past. This is subject to review by the Board, of course.
3) Congratulations to all of our Sectional and Junior National swimmers on their performances at the various locations. Although I don’t know the entire results, I have heard that everyone swam very well, established many personal bests, and placed in the top eight several times. Also, congrats to Amber Boucher for receiving the Swimmer of the Year award from the Statesman-Journal newspaper.
4) Further congratulations to the newly elected Board - Randy Rasmussen, Julie Mischkot, Sue Simenec, Vicki Awalt, Kathy Kibby, Will Castanares, Joel Rumrill and Kathleen Zaragoza. I look forward to working more closely with them and continuing to grow our club and achieve higher successes.
5) Look for notifications of group changes. I know I will be sending out “congratulatory notes” to my swimmers, telling them of their practice times, etc. in the next few days. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the staff.
6) The new billing statements will not be printed until I know when the practices will start. Thus, monthly dues for April will be prorated when practices commence for the younger age groups.
7) I sent out a brief email re: the Pledge-A-Thon for the Kroc center competitive pool. If you wish a pledge sheet, I have made some copies for those interested. Again, the swimming portion can be done most anytime, or at the Courthouses on 4/14, with pledge total information ready by 4/15. This project is for the maintenance endowment and building of a competitive pool at the Kroc center.
Best Wishes for the rest of the break,
Al Stephenson

Veronica and Slyvia Lawson’s Mother Prayers Needed

March 31st, 2007

I received a call at 2am this morning from Mexico. Ana and her family were in a very serious car/van accident last night. Her father was killed and Ana is in surgery now as I board the plane here at PDX. The only thing I know is that she has very serious head injuries and is expected to be in surgery for the next 5 hours.
As soon as they stabilize her my plan is to work with the US Consulate to get her moved stateside as quickly as possible.
I will keep you posted as I find out more.
Glen Lawson
Update
First of all…Ana is alive. She is in stable but serious condition.
Secondly…let me thank everyone for their prayers, emails and support during the last 24-36 hours.. I have received countless inquiries into the status of not only Ana but her entire family. I do not have everyone’s emails in my phone so if I have missed someone please cascade this message to others as you deem appropriate.
From what I can gather so far Segundo (Ana’s father) died at the accident site. Eusebia (mother), Katwyn (sister) and Ivan (brother) are at this hospital in Cancun. Estrelli and Esther (two other sisters) are at the hospital in Playa de Carmen. Ivan suffered severe head trauma but is ok. Katwyn has severe bruising along with a leg injury. Estrelli suFfered a broken noise with head trauma. Ana’s mom is suffering from bruises (legs, hips, shoulder). In short…Ana was sitting behind Segundo when the accident occured.
Now to Ana…
She has several issues, is coherent but in a lot of pain. She has what they call aT7 fracture. Technically she should paralyzed but for some reason she is neurologically intact. When I arrived I found out they had not performed the surgery as they wanted to brief me on several different problems. The issues I am dealing with are the following:

1. Her surgery will require quite a bit of blood. The hospital had no blood of her type until a few hours ago (around 8pm).
2. The neuro-surgeon onsite has been out of residency only 3 years with 2-3 operations of this type under his belt. While the hospital is fully confident in his skills I am not. Even if I did have confidence in his skills I question the ability for the hospital to carry out the post-op care necessary for this type of injury.
3. The complete right side of Ana’s face has been fractured and lacerated. She will require quite a bit a plastic surgery and the hospital here wants to do both procedures at the same time. That does not excite me. Again…the hospital is fully confident in their skills but I am not.
4. Cigna does not pay foreign hospitals direct and the hospital is demanding full payment upfront for any work or operations. Ana’s visit did include tourist insurance but we have moved beyond that approved/authorized number as of a few hours ago.
With all that said…
At 8:00am a “life line” lear jet will land here in Cancun to transport Ana to OHSU in Portland, OR. Our friend (and orthapedic surgeon) will accompany Ana on the flight back in case any problems arise in flight. There are some risks associated with the flight but those do not even come close to the issues I am dealing with here. Both Paul and I have both spoken with the trauma surgeon, neurological surgeon, ER surgeon back at OHSU and they are preparing for her arrival. There is only room for (1) person/passenger on the life line plane and I feel it’s best for that person to be Paul. As it stands now I was able to grab the last seat on a Mexicanna flight and will arrive in Portland late Saturday night.
Some other family members are in route now from Spain here to Cancun. Their plan is to gather the family as they get out of the hospital and work with the consulate to take Segundo back to Spain.
That’s about all I can tell you for now. I will follow up with more information as time permits.

note from Kate

March 20th, 2007

I wanted to make a quick plea before I left town I am doing the million dollar swim. I would like to do it on BEHALF of the Bearcat swim Club. Kids do not need to do it. But………. I would like the teams support. I will be asking for donations from every family! even if it is just a dollar or 5 dollars. I will be attempting to swim 10k in three hours on April 14. I have a pledge sheet but if parents would like to email me a confirmation of their pledge I would greatly appreciate it. Leaving for Florida and the two week break doesn’t give me a whole lot of personal time to go to each parent, so this email will hopefully find families willing to help me out!! I will check my email only when I get back from Florida next week, hopefully the Bearcats will have a successful week at Nationals and Age Group Sectionals!!! Go Bearcats. kate phifer

bearcat update

March 1st, 2007

Dear Families: Here is the latest of what is up and coming. I apologize for its length (and I’m sure I’ll have something wrong), and tardiness. As always, feel free to pass on to others not on my list.
1) There will be billing statements printed next week and distributed in your family folders. Fees for some competitions: OSI 10 & under Chps. $3.50 per swim, $4 surcharge, TTSC Inv. $3 per swim, $1.50 surcharge, OSI 11-14 Chps. $3.50 per swim, $4 surcharge. After this month, I hope to “reconcile” and keep statements smaller and easier to read. Also, the advisory committee voted to put in place a late fee ($10) for monthly dues not received by the 15th of each month. 2) Please vote for your Advisory Committee, fundraising Committee by placing your ballots in the box with the folders at the pool. See Randy Rasmussen if you have any questions. 3) Upcoming meets: This weekend at the Multnomah Athletic Club is the OSI Senior Chps., March 6-10th is Senior Sectionals, March 16-18th is the Pacific Crest Chps. at Sheldon Pool in Eugene, March 23-25th is Age Group Sectionals in Federal Way, Wa., and March 20-24th is Junior Nationals in Orlando, Fl. With all these meets, I hope all of our team will compete somewhere, especially those with BC times at the Pac Crest Chps. Good luck to all!! 4) Competition schedule: 4/27-29 @ Lincoln City (if we get in), 5/4-6 THSC ABC Open, 5/18-20 CAT AB Invite (qualifiers only), also 5/18-20 WSC ABC Invite, 6/15-17 M.Morris Inv. @ Eugene’s Amazon pool for BC swimmers, 6/21-24 MHST AB Invite, 7/10-14 Sr. Sect’ls, 7/14-15 OSI 10 & under Chps @ Amazon, 7/26-29 OSI 11&over Chps. @ MHCC, 7/31-8/4 Nationals @ Indianapolis, 8/6-10 Jr. Nationals @ Indianapolis, 8/7-11 Western Zones @ Farmington, NM, and lastly 8/10-12 the BEND Invite. 5) Our spring break will be: March 19th - April 1st. Restarting April 2nd, at Willamette’s Sparks pool - hoorah!! The ONLY swimmers practicing during the break will be those who compete/qualified for AG Sectionals and Junior Nationals. 6) Which brings up group changes. All will be contacted about possible group changes/moves to the next level. If you have questions, contact the coach of the group of your swimmer for more information. 7) There will be another coach on deck starting upon our return from break. Her name is Amy Boudreau, currently coaching the Dallas Blue Dolphin Swim Team. Amy will be serving a number of roles - teaching some pre-comp classes, coaching AG1 & 2’s (with Robbert), and assisting myself with our returned group of Senior Preps. She is well thought of, and excited for this oppurtunity - so please welcome her, have patience as she learns our “system”, and introduce yourself to her. 8) The practice times for when we return will be: AG1 - Tu/Th - 5:15-6:15pm, AG2 - MWF - 5:15-6:15pm, AG3 - M thru F - 5:15-6:15pm, Senior Preps - M thru F, 6:15-7:30ish. These practices will be at Willamette’s Sparks pool. Seniors will practice with Kate at Chemawa M thru Th, 5-7pm, and at Willamette on MWF, 5-6:30am. Sat. am’s will be at Kate’s discretion and open to Senior Preps. She has decided to give Fri. nites off to the seniors for their various HS events. The senior schedule will change when school lets out to: M thru Sat. 6:30 - 9am at Willamette, Tu/Th 5-7pm at Chemawa. 9) Senior Preps - a return of this group, and a way to add some HS swimmers to our club. This group will be defined as a higher level of practice above AG3, yet designed for HS athletes who don’t have the aerobic capacity for our senior level group. This group has the option of practicing daily for 1:15-1:30, at nite, with Sat. am’s, and will be coached by Al and Amy. The fees for this group will be like past years - $75 per month. We hope this will break down the “gap” between our AG3′rs and Seniors, and add some HS athletes as well. Everyone will be a member of BRSC and have to pay the initiation plus USA registration fee. 10) We hope to add a couple Pre-Comp classes as well this spring. The description for these classes is: ability to do some swimming, learning some competitive techniques (free/back/breast), and will be 1/2 hour in length, taught from 4:45-5:15 (and if enough interest, 5:15-5:45) on Tu/Th. These classes will cost $20 for 2 weeks, with a class ratio of 5:1, and we hope to have 2 classes for each 1/2 hour. If you know of anyone interested, have them contact me - 503-370-6601. We hope to start them in mid-April, and will advertise them as well. 11) Spring tryouts will be April 14, Saturday, from 9-11am. Again, if you know of anyone interested, have them contact me at the # above. This will also be advertised in the newspaper later this month. 12) Sparks update: as mentioned several times already - we should be up and running by April 1st. There is still some work to do, adding a sealant to hinge points, new tile, and repainting (which takes 2 wks. to “cure”). But I hope it will be completed, filled and running by then. I know I’m ready to get back “home”. 13) We have had some great press this year, primarily because our swimmers have swam so well. But many have not received any notoriety, especially those pre-HS. Congrats should be given to: at 10 & unders Chps - Jeffrey Tran (won 2 breastroke titles), Alex Castanares, all three Clifford girls - Allie, Hannah, Hailey, Jacob Cochran, Evette Dow, Emma Harnisch, Allie Rasmussen, Cole & Mackenzie Rumrill, Keana Shorb, Sophie Showers, Carter Garfield, and Meredith Todd. At the 11-14 state Chps: Brittany Awalt, Megan Chong, Elliot & Emma Dow, Raymond Goeser, Jennifer Konick, Alex Lianopoulos, Brooke Mischkot, Rachael Nelson, Tori Simenec, Jackie Tran, Kyle Wicks, and Amanda Zaragoza. Many of these swimmers have also qualified for Sectional competition - which is another big step towards regional & national recognition.
My thanks to the advisory committee, headed by Randy Rasmussen. If you are interested in helping with the administration, guidance, fundraising, etc. of the club, I urge you to do so. Additionally, we hope to bring an officials’ clinic to Salem to train more officials. More plans!!!
