BRSC update

August 29th, 2006

Dear Families: Here is the latest news of what is happening with our swim club. As always, feel free to pass this on to those not on this list, and encourage them to contact me to get their names added.
1) I’ve sent out the billing statements today, hopefully meaning everyone will receive theirs Tues/Wed. The Bend Inv. and Jr. Nationals meets have not been added, as I did not have the information to pass on at the time of printing. If you have questions, feel free to contact me. You have a choice of paying your bills, either mail them to the mailing address listed, drop them by my office or administration office upstairs in Sparks.
2) We are still trying to find adequate water space for our various levels. The seniors will be practicing their “ballet” for the next two weeks, and then start early am practices on 9/25 at Olinger pool, 5:30-6:30am. Kate has also arranged Sat. practices in Corvallis. We are still working on some times for pm.
3) Age group programming is still in limbo - as I don’t think early and late times are conducive to our younger swimmers. Early = prior to 6:30, and late = after 8pm. which seems about the only times mostly available right now. We still have a couple options, but will know more in the next week or so… I thank all the parents who have volunteered some information about different sites thus far. I am still thinking we don’t want to travel too far for ag’rs. Anyone have any additional thoughts?
4) We will NOT hold tryouts, unless something opens up. If that occurs, I will pass it on, as well as inform the newspaper.
5) Currently, the only fees to be assessed for the month of Sept. will be the seniors - as their practice times have been set, whether it be for running, dancing, water practices.
6) Kate has asked me to forward on the fall meet schedule. Signups will be via email to Kate (Kate Phifer ). The first two (2) meets are the Harvest Open @ Newberg, Oct. 6-8th, and the Marie DeHoog Inv. @ Willamalane in Springfield, Oct. 14-15th.
7) The coaching staff is brainstorming on ways to incorporate dryland for our age groupers (12 & unders) until we can get water practice time.
Thanks to everyone for their understanding and assistance. Enjoy the last week of summer before school starts.

BRSC update

August 23rd, 2006

Dear Families: It is my sincerest hope that everyone is enjoying the balance of the summer, and the break from swimming. I know some rumors have circulated, and I want to give everyone the latest information.
1. Our pool at Sparks is in dire straits. After the emptying a couple weeks ago, it literally “erupted” from the bottom caused by water pressure from many years of cracks/leaks in the drainage pipes. The bottom has multiple cracks, and thus, will be completely taken up. Additionally, the drainage pipes and the fill under the bottom will be taken up and replaced. There is still a question of the sidewalls - whether they also leak and contributed to the water accumulation under the bottom - thus, they may be taken down and piping replaced as well. There are still some other “issues” - such as water table stability, additional possible leaking pipes, sidewall stability, etc. that our maintenance dept. has experts evaluating. This “project” may continue into January, dependent upon the amount of work that has to be done. The positive news is: 1) school administration has been quoted as saying there is no option other than to “get it done”. 2) if the sidewalls need replacing, we may get a “new” pool with 2 additional lanes. Kate and I have contacted several area pools, trying to find water time to continue practices. We hope to have more answers in the next week or so, and will pass on our practice times, dates, places, etc. As for tryouts, that date/time is on hold until further notice. If you have suggestions, questions, etc. please feel free to contact me @ 503-370-6601 (w), 503-581-9642 (h), 503-949-9825 (cell). Thanks for everyone’s understanding.

bearcat updates

August 4th, 2006

Dear Families:
Following is my last installment of the BEARCATs for the summer. I must say it has been a very successful LC season as you will read later. As always, feel free to pass this information on to anyone not on my list - and have them inform me of their email address & I will add them.
1) Practice at Willamette’s Sparks Center is finished for the summer, as of Friday morning. Again, NO PRACTICE on Friday afternoon as you ma have read from Randy & Michelle Rasmussen’s email. Our maintenance dept. had to shut down the pool a week early because of contractor dates & times to get repairs completed by the start of school. Maintenance projects are: a) replace the tiles along the gutter edge of the pool (we have had four (4) cuts requiring stitches in the last 1 1/2 yrs), b) replace some valves and piping in the boileroom, and possibly c) replace the lighting fixtures with fluorescent lights. This work is scheduled for three weeks, but should be completed by the time BRSC resumes in Sept.
2) There will be practice for the Bend/Zone swimmers at Jan Ree pool on Tues/Thurs of next week at 8:30-9:30am. Coach Tim will be there for that time. We ask only for those participants, as the pool is smaller than ours.
3) Thus, our “break” begins. We will resume on Sept. 5th, at 5:15pm with the same schedule as we had during the summer. AG1 = Tu/Th 5:15-6:15pm, AG2 = MWF 5:15-6:15pm, AG3 = M thru F 5:15-6:15pm, and Seniors 6:15-7:45pm. As you can surmise, after much discussion among the coaching staff, we are going to “eliminate” the Sr. Preps group - they will either become AG3′rs or moved up to the Seniors. We will also “add” an additional practice on Sat.’s for AG3′rs from 9-10am for those wishing additional time, with a fee of $10 per month. Let me know and I will tell Kate & Tim, and adjust your bill. The reason behind this move was lack of room & an appropriate water practice time. The coaching staff will tell everyone of their group before Sept.
4) The Sept., the Seniors will be doing dryland from 5:30-6:15 on MWF, and Sat. am’s will start at 7am with some dryland as well. Additionally, Kate has set up an interesting experience for all the Seniors the first couple weeks of practice. The entire first week will be composed of ballet practice, and the second week 1/2 ballet and 1/2 swimming. The ballet classes will be taught by Olga Arnautov - who was a premier ballerina in her youth growing up in Russia. This will be a great experience for the swimmers, strengthen their legs, increase their coordination, and maybe overcome some dancing phobias. More information to follow from Kate.
5) With the Seniors being “balleted” during the first week (Sept. 5-8th) - we will hold AG3 practice from 6:15-7:15pm, so they can have the whole pool.
6) We will conduct “tryouts” on Sept. 9th, at 9:00am. If you know of anyone interested in joining the team, have them contact me at either: 503-370-6601, or home 503-581-9642. I can tell everyone this important item: we are really concentrating on 11 & unders - no seniors, HS’rs. Again, this comes down to lack of room and water time for proper training.
7) We will wait until after the tryouts to make group changes, especially those in AG1-3. This will give us a better idea of what the tryout talent is, place everyone properly in their group, address # of lanes per group, etc. The only group which will get early notification is the Sr. Preps - either Srs. or AG3. We have talked previously about “adopting” the new families to help them understand and assimilate into the club. Do we have any volunteers who would like to take this on?
8) Robbert van Andel will be assisting the staff with our team entries next year. Robbert is Oregon Swimming’s main website person, and you may know him as the elder statesman that has been swimming with the Seniors. He will be a huge benefit to us, and aid in trying to eliminate overentering, reduce meet fees (thus save families some $), increase our computer skills and efficiency, etc.
9) I keep forgetting to thank Eamon Ford for his website work for the team. Although I don’t check the site, I have heard many wonderful compliments about it, his expertise, etc. I’m sure Eamon and Robbert will work together to further compliment this feature. Eamon - Thanks for all your work!!
10) Following the above two points, the staff will try and do a better job of informing parents and swimmers of their entries for future meets. This will include each swimmer’s events, plus any relays. One of the areas we need to improve upon is cutting down on lost revenues because of unswum relays. We hope that the better communication will result in families understanding their commitment to attending competitions enrolled, and a penalty given for absentees causing a relay to “scratch.”
11) Congratulations to all our state qualifiers the last month. Again, I am surprised by the percentage of our team that qualifies, and attends wholeheartedly. We have had several state champions - Jeffrey Tran, Mackenzie Rumrill, Kyle Wicks, Tori Simenec, Crystal Kibby, Ellen Dow, Natascha Mangan, and Amber Boucher. Also a relay or two with Tori, Crystal, Ellen and Sammi Mischkot. Top 8 finishers included: Allie Rasmussen, Mackenzie Rumrill, Jeffrey Tran, Eamon Ford, Adam Hansen, Raymond Goeser, Nathaniel Smith-Tripp, Andrew Naugle, Kei Otawa, Robbert van Andel, Alex Lianopoulos, Rachael Nelson, and Amanda Zaragoza. There are plenty of others who participated, and swam very very well, but suffice it to say it has been a very successful season.
12) See Randy Rasmussen’s email re: our Oregon All-Stars attending the Western Zone Meet. Ellen Dow, Sammi Mischkot, Natascha Mangan, and Kyle Wicks. Also attending Jr. Nationals in Irvine, CA. next week will be Crystal Kibby, Tori Simenec, and Amber Boucher. Good luck to all!!!
13) Meet fees charged to accounts are: OSI LC 10&unders - $3.50 per swim, $5 surcharge. OSI LC 11&overs - $3.50 per swim, $7 surcharge. Speedo Sr. Sectionals - $8.50 per individual, $5 per relay, $15 surcharge.
14) I will print billing statements thru August, and mail to everyone. If you have moved, please let me know ASAP. Also, I would like to “close out” all accounts in Sept., so it would be greatly appreciated to balance your fees in Sept. for the new season.
Thanks to all who have helped and supported this great team’s success this entire year. Without all the help, in all areas, it would be extremely difficult to have the success we are having. Have a great break, travel safely if so doing, and I look forward to seeing everyone in Sept.

bearcat update 7/24

August 1st, 2006

Dear Families: With the recent heat waves, I do believe summer is here - and here for awhile. I encourage all to drink lots of fluids during the day, irregardless of amount of activity because the body will sweat more than we think we do. Here are some recent news regarding the club’s swimmers, and updates:
1) At the recent 10 & under championships, Jeffrey Tran won the 9 year old state title in the 50 Breast. What’s more amazing is he won it from the 2nd heat, not one of the final/seeded heats. That’s two (2) years in a row for Jeffrey winning the breastroke title. Now, about those freestyles and backstrokes… 2) Also at the meet were Lilly Barnes, Fernanda Casas, Allie & Hannah Clifford, Carter Dorn, Evette Dow, Emma Harnisch, Allie Rasmussen and Mackenzie Rumrill. We had some typical age group swims - some good, some bad - but I want to thank all the kids and parents for the signed T-shirt. It is with my other one from SC season, and I will always treasure them. 3) Coach Kate took several of our swimmers up to Federal Way (Tacoma area) for the Senior Sectionals this past weekend. The swimmers performed very, very well, with Tori Simenec and Amber Boucher achieving US Open standards. Although I don’t know all the placings, Kate did tell me that there were some HUGE time drops by Sammi Mischkot, Ellen Dow, Natascha Mangan, Crystal Kibby, Corrinne Burrow, in their respective individual events. Also attending and swimming well were the male contingent of Adam Hansen and Kei Otawa. 4) I have mailed out some billing statements - those that have been left in the swimmer’s folders. Please take the time to read and send in your payment, and maybe add August’s dues as well. Fees for 10 & unders chmps. were: $5 surcharge, $3.50 per individual/relay swim. 5) As we approach the end of the season, with the Bend Invite entries going out soon, I want to announce our “break”. It will be a little earlier because of the school closing the pool for maintenance - retiling our gutters, exchanging some valves and pipes in the boiler room, and possibly new lights (flourescent vs. the mercury vapor we now have). The last practice at Willamette will be Friday, Aug. 4th for the AG’rs. Kate will probably have a practice Sat. am (8/5) but check with her. I am trying to find some pool time for the next week prior to Bend, and will inform everyone as it gets confirmed. 6) I have been asked about tryouts for next year. We will hold them on the second Sat. in Sept. (the first weekend is Labor Day), at 9am, here at Sparks Center. If you know anyone interested, please pass on the info, and have them contact me for any questions & answers.
Stay cool, hydrated, and see you at the pool,
Al Stephenson
