BRSC Update

February 22nd, 2006

Families:
Here is a brief update on what’s happening with the club this
month. As always, feel free to pass this on to others that may not be
on my list.

1) Congratulations to our high school swimmers on the success of
their season. Besides the athletes that got some newsprint, we had
many others that achieved personal goals, and had successful high
school campaigns. Congrats to all!
2) A side note from the HS state meet - Amber Boucher made a senior
national time in the 50 free - the very first swimmer to achieve this
status in Salem.
3) With the completion of the 10 & under state championships last
weekend, the 11-14’s this weekend, and then senior state’s - the
BEARCATs have qualified approximately 65% of the team for the state
championships. Congrats to all our swimmers for a remarkable team
achievement!!
4) We have had a chicken pox sighting from the 10 & under
championships. So parents of AG1/2/3’s, look for those “spots” - it
can be contagious, despite vaccinations.
5) I have put invoices for February in everyone’s folders, in case no
one’s checked theirs lately. This does not include any of the
championship fees, but should include all fees thru January.
6) Next month we have the Pacific Crest Championship here at
Willamette. This is a B/C meet, designed for those who did not swim
at the state level, or anyone who wants to swim some events that do
not qualify for the state championships. The signup sheet is still on
the bulletin board for a few more days. This is a 2 1/2 day meet,
with some events on Friday afternoon/evening. I anticipate about
200-250 athletes coming, from all areas of the state, and should be
very competitive.
7) Along with the above, we are always looking for volunteers to
assist in the administration of the competition. Anyone can help, in
a variety of areas, so call our meet directors - Jen Johnson, Natalie
Rodgers, Randy Rasmussen, Don Clifford, Will Castanares to assist.
8) Congrats to Coach Kate for the development of some swimmers who
have qualified for senior sectionals (to be held in Arizona), and
junior nationals (to be held in Florida). These swimmers are: Tori
Simenec, Amber Boucher, Natascha Mangan, Sammi Mischkot, and Crystal
Kibby. There are a couple more that are close, and hope to make the
cut with the various championships in the next couple weeks. Good
luck to all in the upcoming competitions.
9) With the various competitions upcoming, the coaching staff will be
“switching” alot to cover - but we are planning on having all the
practice sessions covered. This is a great oppurtunity for our
swimmers to learn from other coaches, and get acquainted.

See you all on deck,

Al Stephenson

State Meets

February 21st, 2006

Good evening everyone!

First of all ~~  Congratulations to all  of our 10 & under swimmers this past weekend.  There was a strong showing from our younger swimmers.  There were a lot of personal bests swam, high placing and most importantly, the kids had a lot of fun!!   Great job to the swimmers and coaches.

Next up is our 11 - 14 State Swimmers.  Please see the following information regarding warm ups:

Thursday:  Kate wants everyone who is swimming the mile or on relays to be at the pool at the specified warm up time of 4:00 pm.  She wants everyone to get a good warm up in and cheer for those swimming the mile.

Friday - Sunday:  Warm ups start at 7:30 for EVERYONE.  If a swimmer has a late swim, only with permission from a coach can a swimmer show up later than that on any given day.

Good luck to everyone this weekend.

Jennifer

Subject: Bearcat Sponsorship Opportunities

Dear Parents,
As you are aware, the Pacific Crest Meet is upon us.  This is a great honor for the Bearcats to be hosting this event and a great opportunity to raise money for the team.  This money helps pay for our much appreciated coaching staff as well as a host of activities for our swimmers.  We shouldn’t let this opportunity pass.

In that spirit, we are seeking event sponsors for each of the 93 events we have scheduled for that weekend.   Event sponsorship will have the following benefits:

* Printed name next to the event
* Announcement of the sponsor at the start of the event

When you are traversing town with your family and come across businesses that you support, ask if they would be willing to sponsor an event for this statewide swimming event.  We are expecting approximately 300 swimmers and over 1000 people attending this event for the weekend.  But we are not emphasizing advertising, but rather it’s a chance for a business to:

·       Show the team that they enjoy the Bearcat’s business over the years both in the past and the future;
·       Promote the City of Salem to our out-of-town visitors; and
·       Support the Bearcat Swimmers

We have had a number of families indicate that they would like to sponsor an event for their swimmers, so we have created a family sponsorship price as well.  Families will receive Coach Kate’s discount sponsorship pricing.

Although we endeavor to match event sponsors with a particular swimmer, it is difficult and we cannot reasonably guarantee this to be accomplished.  We are offering them at a first-come, first-served basis.  So get your sponsorship in early.

Corporate Sponsorship:  $100 per event
Family:  $25 per event

Please contact me if you have found a business that would like to make a tax-deductible donation in support of the Bearcat.  I will follow up on your information and contact the business.

BRSC Update

February 15th, 2006

Dear Families:
Following is my latest update on what is happening with our swim
club. As always, feel free to pass on to anyone not on my email list.

1) Tonite’s spaghetti feed will be held on the pool deck, as the
multi-purpose room is scheduled for WU events. There will be tables
set up for the food, and all are welcome to attend and fill their
bellies. This has become an annual tradition to honor those athletes
who have qualified for the state age group championships held in the
next couple weekends. Again, there will be practice for those
scheduled from 5:15-6:15pm, and the potluck will begin thereafter.
2) With all the championships upon us, we must take time to
acknowledge some great swimming by our athletes. With the high school
season coming to a close with their respective state championships
this weekend, the BEARCATs truly showed their mettle. Amber Boucher
has received some print, but what most don’t realize she is the first
senior national qualifier that Salem has ever had, making the cut in
the 50 Free. Other notable swims were recorded by Natascha Mangan and
Katherine Tomscha in the butterfly, Andrew Naugle, Xochitl
Martinez, Sheila Beery, Sarah Boehmer, Tori Grimwood, Erica Nelson,
and Kirsten Wicks. Congrats to these swimmers, and good luck at state.
3) Along with the above mentioned swimmers, the BEARCATs also have
another group of young ladies who have reached national status. With
their recent performance at the Corvallis Inv., another relay
qualified for junior nationals - Amber Boucher, Sammi Mischkot,
Crystal Kibby, and Tori Simenec. With Natascha Mangan already
qualified, that becomes a great group for Coach Kate to take to
Florida. This same group will travel to Arizona next month for Senior
Sectionals, with the possible addition of a couple other potential
qualifiers.
4) We are planning our awards banquet for the second week in April.
The site has yet to be determined, but this has become a great
tradition honoring all our athletes, showing a team video, pizza or
some form of food, and good times by all. I encourage everyone to
make room on their calendar, as it’s important to acknowledge
everyone’s accomplishments and meet faces that you might not normally
interact with.
5) BRSC is in the final planning stages for the Pacific Crest
Championships that we are hosting in March. There are several “team”
members looking for volunteers to assist in the planning/execution of
this meet. I expect approximately 250 swimmers to attend, from
Roseburg, North Bend, Beaverton, Stayton, Eugene and Sherwood. To
volunteer, contact Jen Johnson, Natalie Rodgers, Sue Simenec, Don
Clifford, Joel Rumrill, and Will Castanares. Any assistance will be
greatly appreciated.
6) We are approaching the end of the season, thus our “break” will be
upon us. This might change, but our two week break will probably be
from March 20 thru April 2nd, with practice restarting on Monday,
April 3rd. As of this writing, practice times will remain the same.
Also, any group changes will occur during the month of April - after
we have our “tryouts”.
7) If you know of anyone interested in joining the BEARCATs, please
have them contact me at 503-370-6601. We will schedule the tryouts
for Saturday, April 1st, 9am, in the Sparks Center pool.

Thanks to all, enjoy some upcoming great swimming, and good luck to
all our swimmers as they finish this season.
